Northumberland County Council produced a video (below) to raise awareness of the facilities available to people wanting to know more about their ancestors.

It was uploaded onto internet video sharing site YouTube and has got more than 12,000 hits.

Video: Recycling in Northumberland

A video has been launched by Northumberland County Council to help it meet demanding Government recycling targets.

The tutorial video (watch below) shows Northumberland County Council's new recycling centre in action and helps residents understand what can and can't be put into the recycling bin.

In Northumberland the council is responsible for collecting waste from more than 140,000 households as well as thousands of business premises.

The mountain biking season came to a head at the weekend with the Oktoberfest 50k ride - the last event in the Bike Place marathon series, where the final standings from the season were determined, along with trophies for the day's performances.

The route followed man-made sections, forest roads and some harder off-piste areas, covering three laps of 18 kilometres.

But organisers have ensured it is a very accessible event - not just limited to biking experts, but open for all abilities to take part.

The Rochester Show took place over the weekend, and despite the shortening days and colder weather, people enjoyed a great afternoon of sunny weather on the show field.

The dog show proved popular and there were lots of people taking part in the industrial sections, as well as flower arrangements and vegetable competitions.

And instead of the traditional tossing the bale competition, there was rolling the bale, which was won by James Chapman from Carrs Billington Agriculture in Hexham.

Eddie Izzard passes through North Tyne on run

An unlikely trio can be seen making their way through the region today in the form of athletes Steve Cram, Alison Curbishley and ... Eddie Izzard!

Yesterday, pictured, the 47-year-old comedian and actor covered the 27 miles between the A68 at Otterburn to the A696 in Ponteland.

The famously cross-dressing comic has launched a bid to run more than 1,000 miles in seven weeks to raise cash for Sport Relief. And today he will jog from Ponteland, through Newcastle city centre and south to Durham, accompanied by athletes Steve Cram and Alison Curbishleey.

This week's delve into The Journal's photographic archives takes us to a part of Northumberland now under billions of litres of water.

Kielder Water is now well-established as one of the region's top leisure destinations, but in the 1970s and early 1980s there was a bitter battle about plans to construct the reservoir by flooding large parts of the North Tyne Valley.

The scheme led to the loss of many farms and houses in the area.

A weekend of two halves saw families brave the rain and then bask in sunshine in events across the North East.

Despite gloomy skies on Saturday, the usual crowds of visitors flocked to the Otterburn Festival in Northumberland to raise funds for the Great North Air Ambulance.

This year's two-day festival offered a packed programme of family entertainment, with the famous Red Arrows RAF aerobatics display team wowing crowds.
